“Community offers the promise of belonging and calls for us to acknowledge our interdependence. To belong is to act as an investor, owner, and creator of this place. To be welcome, even if we are strangers. As if we came to the right place and are affirmed for that choice.
To feel a sense of belonging is important because it will lead us from conversations about safety and comfort to other conversations, such as those about our relatedness and willingness to provide hospitality and generosity. Hospitality is the welcoming of strangers, and generosity is extending an offer with no expectation of return. These are two elements that we want to nurture as we work to create, strengthen, and restore our communities.”
The passage above is a snippet from Peter Block's book "Community - The Structure of Belonging." It explores the commitment and mindfulness needed to foster a sense of community. As a yoga instructor and realtor, I constantly strive to nurture community in my classes and by helping clients find a sense of belonging in their new homes. This topic frequently occupies my thoughts as I reflect on the challenges of building community in both my personal and professional spheres. Despite calling Seattle my home for the past three years, I still find myself actively working to cultivate a feeling of home and belonging within this city. It is a journey that continues to unfold, as I explore various avenues to create meaningful connections and weave the threads of belonging into the fabric of my life in Seattle.
Creating a home is a personal, transformative process. It's more than just the physical space— by nurturing an environment that reflects our identity, values, and aspirations, we surround ourselves with familiar objects, cherished memories, and loved ones who provide safety and acceptance. Home becomes a sanctuary, offering retreat, solace, and a place to recharge.
I find the multifaceted nature of the feeling of home captivating, as it holds unique significance for each person. Inspired by this fascination, I've created a monthly event called "Exploration of Home." It's an immersive and thought-provoking experience that distills the essence of home. Through deep and engaging conversations intertwining wellness and the concept of home, we embark on a journey similar to speed dating. Together, we unravel the intricate layers of belonging, uncovering insights about the profound connection between our sense of home and overall well-being.
Last month, we answered these three questions:
Past - Think back to your favorite bedroom, what qualities and images does this bedroom evoke?
Present - Sensing into your bedroom, what phenomena comes to your attention?
Future - What wants to be included in your bedroom? What screams of urgency? What would help your bedroom feel whole? What habits ground you to have a healthy daily rhythm in your bedroom?
Friday, June 23rd 5-7 PM, we will gather for the NEXT - Exploration of Home event at The Shop by Porter located Downtown Seattle on the street level of the 2+U building. The entrance to The Shop is on 1st Ave. I recommend opting to take public transit due to heavy traffic and parking challenges. 2+U building does have underground parking for $7 an hour, entrance located on Seneca. Exploration of Home is an opportunity to connect, learn from one another, and gain a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be a part of a thriving community.

Welcome to Yama Yoga—let the wonder in”
Discovering these words painted on the wall at Yama Yoga Studio in Milwaukee, WI, led me to embark on their 200-hour yoga teacher training in 2017. Since then, I've been teaching yoga classes and have always been drawn to studios that cultivate a sense of home within their walls. It fascinates me how certain yoga spaces excel in creating that feeling through their decor, enthusiastic instructors, location, and community. If you're longing to find a movement community that feels like home, here is my teaching schedule for the summer.
